Course Description

The primary objective of this course is to develop a comprehensive understanding of the intricate relationship between emotion and motivation from a psychological science perspective. Importantly, this course utilizes the Parisian landscape (it’s art, history, and society) to contextualize psychological theory. Through a combination of classroom learning and field excursions throughout the city, you will gain a deeper perspective on how emotion and motivation intertwine to affect real-world change and gain an applied understanding of how human behavior can be shaped. Notably, by the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Define and categorize emotions according to their multilevel structure and functions.

  • Understand and analyze the relationship between emotion and motivation, using both theoretical frameworks and practical examples drawn from the history, art, and culture of Paris.

  • Evaluate common theories of motivation and how emotion is implicated throughout.

  • Understand how our emotion perceptions and expressions impact daily life, especially with regard to shifting historical and societal contexts and how this is influenced by cultural difference.

  • Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of emotional and motivational input in real-world settings.

  • Integrate multidisciplinary knowledge and demonstrate critical thinking to enhance scientific communication.

Throughout this course you will complete a minimum of five journal entries per week reflecting on how course lessons apply to your surroundings. Each day, a different prompt will be provided aimed at deepening your understanding of how emotion and motivation interact.
