Get Started
An international experience is exciting and transformative—but it starts with thoughtful planning.
1. Reflect on Your Goals
Where do you want to go? What do you hope to learn? What kind of experience are you looking for—academic, cultural, professional, or a mix of all three?
2. Explore Program Types
Rice offers a variety of global programs, from faculty-led courses to internships and exchanges. Learn about the different options and what makes each one unique.

3. Choose a Program and Dive Deeper
Once you’ve found a program that interests you, explore the details—location, academics, housing, and more.

4. Talk to Your Academic and Major Advisors
Make sure your global experience fits into your academic plan and keeps you on track for graduation.

5. Make a Financial Plan
Understand the costs involved and explore funding options. Scholarships, grants, and financial aid may be available to support your journey.
6. Get Your Passport (and Visa)
If you don’t already have a passport, apply early! Processing times can vary, and you’ll need it to travel.
Depending on your destination, you may or may not need a visa.

7. Apply to the Program of Your Choice
Follow the application instructions carefully, once you have chosen a program, and meet all deadlines.
