Course Description
This immersive three-week HART summer course offers a deep dive into the rich tapestry of early European art and architecture, primarily focusing on its unparalleled expressions in Paris and the Île-de-France region. Moving beyond the well-trodden paths, we will explore key monuments, artistic movements, and societal contexts that shaped the visual culture of the period known for its magnificent cathedrals, intricate illuminated manuscripts, and powerful royal patronage. Through a combination of engaging lectures, dedicated site visits, and critical discussions, students will develop a nuanced understanding of Romanesque and Gothic styles, symbolism, patronage, and the daily life in historical Paris.
This course also uniquely bridges the past and present, exploring how the profound themes and artistic innovations of this historical era continue to resonate and inspire modern and contemporary artists. All excursions will be structured as day trips, utilizing Paris's efficient public transport system to explore both renowned landmarks and hidden gems within the city and its immediate, easily accessible surroundings.
