Course Description
This unique offering of ECON 100 combines an introduction to fundamental microeconomic and macroeconomic concepts with an immersive experience in Paris. Students will learn the basic concepts of microeconomics and macroeconomics while gaining insights into the European Union and French economy. The microeconomics course component includes analysis of supply and demand, consumer and producer behavior, and competitive and noncompetitive market equilibria, with applications to current policy issues. The macroeconomics course component provides an overview of the determination of national output, employment, interest rates, and inflation, and analyzes monetary fiscal policies and international trade.
The course includes classroom instruction as well as real-world excursions to institutions such as the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Monnaie de Paris. Designed for both majors and non-majors, this course offers a dynamic learning experience abroad, blending economic principles with the cultural and economic landscape of one of the world’s most historic cities.

James DeNicco, Department of Economics
Dr. DeNicco currently teaches Principles of Economics to over 600 Rice students annually as well as in various master’s programs. Dr. DeNicco’s primary research interests are in Macroeconomics and applied Macroeconomics, especially the relationship between GDP growth and labor dynamics. He is also a Faculty Associate at Baker College, which is one of Rice University’s eleven social colleges, where he was named the 2016 Outstanding Faculty Associate and was given the 2017 Garside Award for Service.
